Safety

The Tiguan has a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Tonale doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Tiguan’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Tonale doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the Tiguan and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Tiguan its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 131 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Tonale has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The Tiguan’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Tonale’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Volkswagen pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tiguan for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volkswagen will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Alfa Romeo only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Tonale.

There are almost 5 times as many Volkswagen dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Tiguan’s warranty.

Reliability

The Volkswagen Tiguan’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Tonale’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Volkswagen vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo With 28 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Volkswagen higher than Alfa Romeo.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Volkswagen Tiguan uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Tonale requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Tiguan FWD’s standard fuel tank has 4.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (15.3 vs. 11.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Tiguan AWD’s standard fuel tank has 4.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (15.9 vs. 11.2 gallons).

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Volkswagen Tiguan higher (7 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Tonale (6). This means the Tiguan produces up to 1.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Tonale every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Volkswagen Tiguan, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Tonale.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Tiguan SE R-Line Black’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Tonale (255/45R19 vs. 235/45R19).

The Tiguan has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tiguan’s wheelbase is 6.1 inches longer than on the Tonale (109.9 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

For greater off-road capability the Tiguan has a 2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (7.6 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Tiguan to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Volkswagen Tiguan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 400 pounds less than the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

Passenger Space

The Tiguan offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Tonale can only carry 5.

The Tiguan has .8 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more front hip room, 1.3 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear legroom and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the Tonale.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Tiguan’s middle row seats recline. The Tonale’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Tiguan’s cargo area provides more volume than the Tonale.

Ergonomics

When the Tiguan SEL Premium is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Tonale’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

Model Availability

The Tiguan is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Tonale doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Volkswagen Tiguan outsold the Alfa Romeo Tonale by over 36 to one during 2023.
