The ID.4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Mirai doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the ID.4 and Mirai have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The ID.4 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Mirai’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The ID.4 Pro has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Mirai doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the ID.4 has standard Rear Traffic Alert with automatic braking, systems which detect vehicles approaching from the sides and can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Parking Support Brake costs extra on the Mirai.

Both the ID.4 and the Mirai have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Volkswagen ID.4 achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The Mirai has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

The ID.4 comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck. The Mirai’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

Volkswagen’s powertrain warranty covers the ID.4 3 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Mirai. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Mirai ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The ID.4’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Mirai’s (7 vs. 5 years).

The ID.4’s standard electric motor produces 19 more horsepower (201 vs. 182) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (229 vs. 221) than the Mirai’s electric motor. The ID.4 Pro’s standard electric motor produces 100 more horsepower (282 vs. 182) and 181 lbs.-ft. more torque (402 vs. 221) than the Mirai’s electric motor. The ID.4 Pro’s optional electric motors produces 153 more horsepower (335 vs. 182) and 280 lbs.-ft. more torque (501 vs. 221) than the Mirai’s electric motor.

The ID.4 Pro S Plus’ 255/40R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Mirai Limited’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the ID.4 Pro S Plus has standard 21-inch wheels. The Mirai’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

For better maneuverability, the ID.4’s turning circle is 7 feet tighter than the Mirai’s (31.5 feet vs. 38.5 feet). The ID.4 AWD’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Mirai’s (36.42 feet vs. 38.5 feet).

The ID.4 is 1 foot, 3.3 inches shorter than the Mirai, making the ID.4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the ID.4 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Mirai doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The ID.4 has 2.2 inches more front headroom, 1.2 inches more rear headroom, 4.5 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Mirai.

The ID.4’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Mirai doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the ID.4 S/S Plus’ power liftgate can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Mirai doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

The ID.4 has a 2200 lbs. towing capacity. The Mirai has no towing capacity.

Standard trailer stability control on the ID.4 uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Mirai doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

A Service Interval Display is standard on the ID.4 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for vehicle inspections, vehicle inspection based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Toyota doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Mirai.

The ID.4’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Mirai XLE’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the ID.4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Mirai doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the ID.4 has a standard rear wiper. The Mirai doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the ID.4 S/S Plus has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Mirai doesn’t offer cornering lights. The ID.4 S/S Plus also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

On extremely cold winter days, the ID.4 S/Plus’ standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Mirai doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The ID.4 S/S Plus has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Mirai.

The Volkswagen ID.4 outsold the Toyota Mirai by almost 14 to one during 2023.
