Compare the2026 Volkswagen ID.4 VS 2026 Mercedes CLA EQ

Both the ID.4 and CLA EQ have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The ID.4 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The CLA EQ’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Volkswagen ID.4’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Mercedes CLA EQ does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the ID.4 and the CLA EQ have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Volkswagen’s powertrain warranty covers the ID.4 4 years and 50,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the CLA EQ. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the CLA EQ ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The ID.4’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the CLA EQ’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Volkswagen pays for scheduled maintenance on the ID.4 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volkswagen will pay for brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the CLA EQ.

There are over 62 percent more Volkswagen dealers than there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the ID.4’s warranty.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Volkswagen vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volkswagen 3 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

The ID.4’s standard electric motor produces 14 more horsepower (282 vs. 268) and 155 lbs.-ft. more torque (402 vs. 247) than the CLA 250+ EQ’s standard electric motor. The ID.4’s electric motor produces 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (402 vs. 380) than the CLA 350 4MATIC EQ’s standard electric motors. The ID.4’s optional electric motors produces 156 lbs.-ft. more torque (536 vs. 380) than the CLA 350 4MATIC EQ’s standard electric motors.

As tested in Motor Trend the Volkswagen ID.4 electric motors is faster than the CLA 250+ EQ electric motor:

On the EPA test cycle the ID.4 RWD gets better mileage than the CLA 250+ EQ RWD with its standard motor (122 city/104 hwy vs. 112 city/105 hwy MPGe).

For better traction, the ID.4 has larger tires than the CLA EQ (F:235/50R20 & R:255/45R20 vs. F:205/55R17 & R:225/50R17). The ID.4 Pro S’ front tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CLA EQ (F:235/50R20 & R:255/45R20 vs. F:225/45R18 & R:255/40R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the ID.4 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the CLA 250+ EQ. The ID.4 Pro S Plus AWD Pro S Plus’ 21-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the CLA EQ.

The ID.4 Pro S AWD handles at .86 G’s, while the CLA 250+ EQ pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the ID.4’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the CLA EQ’s (31.5 feet vs. 36.8 feet). The ID.4 AWD’s turning circle is .4 feet tighter than the CLA EQ’s (36.4 feet vs. 36.8 feet).

The ID.4 is 5.4 inches shorter than the CLA EQ, making the ID.4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the ID.4 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The CLA EQ doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The ID.4 has 1.1 inches more rear headroom, 4 inches more rear legroom and 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the CLA EQ.

The ID.4 has a 2200 lbs. towing capacity. The CLA EQ has no towing capacity.

Standard trailer stability control on the ID.4 uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The CLA EQ doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The ID.4’s standard KESSY Keyless Access allow you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from pocket or purse. Keyless-Start standard on the CLA EQ only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the car.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the ID.4 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The CLA EQ doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the ID.4 has a standard rear wiper. The CLA EQ doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Both the ID.4 and the CLA EQ have standard heated front seats. The ID.4 Pro S Plus also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CLA EQ.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the ID.4 Pro S/Pro S Plus keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The CLA EQ doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The ID.4 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the CLA EQ.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volkswagen ID.4 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the CLA EQ.

The Volkswagen ID.4 outsold the Mercedes CLA by almost three to one during 2025.
